Oracle Essbase Fundamentals

Calc Scripts are used to execute calculations and rollup data across hierarchies in Essbase. The Outline defines the database structure, Rule Files are used for data loading/mapping, and Ess Commands are administrative, making Calc Script the correct component for rollups.

Report Scripts are specifically designed to query and retrieve formatted data from an Essbase cube. While Calc Scripts compute values, MaxL is used for administration, and the Outline defines the hierarchy, Report Scripts are the dedicated tool for data export.

Slicing refers to extracting a subset of data from a multidimensional cube by keeping one or more dimensions constant while varying others. Dicing is selecting a sub-cube by specifying ranges on multiple dimensions. Cutting and subsetting are not standard Essbase operations.

Oracle Essbase is an industry-standard Multidimensional Database Management System (MDBMS) designed for OLAP (Online Analytical Processing). It is not a Relational Database, which uses tables and foreign key relationships, though it can integrate with them.

Multidimensional databases (MDDB) store data at the intersection of dimension members, enabling fast OLAP operations. Unlike relational databases that store rows in tables, MDDBs use array-like structures where each cell contains data at the cross-section of dimensions.

Essbase 6.5 used Application Manager as the primary administrative interface for managing applications, databases, users, and security. Admin Console and Essbase Console are terms from later versions, and OLAP Manager was not the standard tool name for version 6.5.

Microsoft Excel is the primary client interface for Essbase, specifically through the Smart View add-in which enables users to retrieve, analyze, and report on Essbase data directly within spreadsheets. Word and PowerPoint are presentation tools, while Access is a database application not designed for Essbase connectivity.

Rule Files are the Essbase component used to map and load data from external sources into the multidimensional cube structure. They define how source data fields correspond to dimensions and members in the Essbase database. Report Scripts, Calc Scripts, and Outlines serve different purposes - reporting, calculations, and structure definition respectively.

A cube's total cell count equals the product of members across all dimensions. With 3 dimensions each containing 3 members, the calculation is 3 × 3 × 3 = 27 cells. At 1 byte per cell, the cube size is 27 bytes.

Essbase captures cube-related operations in the Application Log, which tracks database-specific activities like calculations, data loads, and modifications. The Server Log handles server-level events, while Database and Cube Log aren't standard Essbase log types.

Application Manager is Essbase's graphical interface including Outline editor, Report Scripts, and Calc Scripts as development tools. MaxL (Multi-dimensional access language) is a separate command-line administrative interface for Essbase operations, not part of the Application Manager suite.

In Essbase hierarchies, multiple child members roll up into a single parent member, creating a many-to-one relationship from bottom to top. For example, multiple product-level members aggregate into one category member, and multiple categories further aggregate into a total product member.

In Essbase, each major business category or perspective (such as Product, Time, Geography, or Account) is organized as a Dimension. Dimensions form the framework for organizing and analyzing data, while Members, Generations, and Levels are components within dimensions.

The Outline is Essbase's structural component that defines all hierarchies, dimensions, and member relationships within a cube. It organizes how data aggregates and rolls up through the hierarchy. Rule Files and Calc Scripts handle data loading and calculations respectively, not structure definition.

An Essbase database cannot have multiple applications; rather, one application can contain multiple databases. In Essbase architecture, applications sit at the top level and databases exist within applications. The relationship is one-to-many from applications to databases, not the reverse.

In Essbase, generation numbers are assigned from top to bottom, with the highest level (often the total or 'all' member) receiving Generation 1, and each subsequent child level getting the next generation number. This top-down numbering system helps distinguish between levels of the hierarchy during calculations and reporting.

The statement is false because lowest-level members ARE Level 0 members - they're the same thing. In Essbase terminology, Level 0 refers to the bottom level of a hierarchy where members have no children. These are the lowest, most detailed members in the dimension.

Essbase.exe (the main Essbase server process) manages user authentication, login, and logout operations. It handles session management and security access control. Esssvr.exe handles individual database instances, while admincon.exe and adminsvr.exe relate to administration functions.

Both are valid Essbase command-line interfaces. DOS Commands and Perl are not Essbase-specific command tools.
