Air Pollution: Acid Rain

The burning of fossil fuels, such as coal and oil, releases sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides into the atmosphere, which react with water vapor to form sulfuric and nitric acids.

Sweden has been a pioneer in using limestone to neutralize acid rain. The country has implemented large-scale liming programs to reduce the acidity of its lakes and forests.

Acid rain does not directly improve air quality. It can contribute to air pollution by releasing harmful pollutants into the atmosphere.

Alkalization refers to the process of making a substance less acidic by adding a base or alkaline substance.

Acid rain can have detrimental effects on buildings and structures, such as corrosion of metal surfaces, erosion of stone facades, and damage to paint and coatings. It does not increase the durability of concrete structures.
