The Role of the United Nations in Decolonization

The United Nations was founded on October 24, 1945, after the Second World War.

The main goal of the United Nations is to maintain international peace and security, promote human rights, and promote social and economic development.

The United Nations contributed to the decolonization process by passing resolutions condemning colonialism, providing financial and technical assistance to newly independent countries, and sending peacekeeping forces to help maintain peace and stability in newly independent countries.

Resolution 1514 (XV), adopted in 1960, declared that all peoples have the right to self-determination and that colonialism is a crime against humanity.

Ghana was the first country to gain independence as a result of UN intervention. It gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1957.
