The Philosophy of Intentionality

Intentionality is the capacity of mental states to be directed at or about something. It is a fundamental property of consciousness and allows us to have thoughts, beliefs, desires, and other mental states that are about the world around us.

Franz Brentano is most closely associated with the theory of intentionality known as Brentano's thesis. Brentano's thesis states that intentionality is a fundamental property of consciousness and that all conscious states are intentional, meaning that they are about something.

The term for the object of an intentional state is 'object'. The object of an intentional state is the thing that the state is about or directed at.

Phenomenal intentionality is not a type of intentionality.
