Presidential Veto

Article I, Section 7, Clause 2 of the US Constitution grants the President the power to veto legislation passed by Congress.

The purpose of a presidential veto is to reject legislation passed by Congress that the President believes is unconstitutional, unwise, or harmful to the nation.

There are two types of presidential vetoes: the regular veto and the pocket veto.

A regular veto occurs when the President rejects a bill passed by Congress and returns it to Congress with a message explaining the reasons for the veto.

A pocket veto occurs when the President neither signs nor vetoes a bill within 10 days (excluding Sundays) after Congress adjourns. In this case, the bill does not become law.

To override a presidential veto, a two-thirds majority vote is required in both the House of Representatives and the Senate.

Presidential vetoes have been overridden less than 10 times in US history, demonstrating the difficulty of overriding a veto.
