Political History: The War on Terror

The 9/11 attacks, perpetrated by al-Qaeda, were a series of four coordinated terrorist attacks by Islamic extremists against the United States on the morning of September 11, 2001.

George W. Bush was the 43rd President of the United States, serving from 2001 to 2009. He was in office during the 9/11 attacks and the subsequent War on Terror.

The primary objective of the War on Terror was to defeat al-Qaeda and other terrorist organizations responsible for the 9/11 attacks and to prevent future terrorist attacks.

Afghanistan was the first country to be invaded as part of the War on Terror. The United States and its allies invaded Afghanistan in October 2001 to overthrow the Taliban regime, which was harboring al-Qaeda.

ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria) emerged as a major threat during the War on Terror. The group gained control of large territories in Iraq and Syria and committed numerous atrocities, including mass executions, beheadings, and sexual slavery.

Operation Neptune Spear was the name of the U.S. military operation that resulted in the death of Osama bin Laden in May 2011. The operation was carried out by U.S. Navy SEALs who raided bin Laden's compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan.

Syria experienced a civil war as a result of the War on Terror. The conflict began in 2011 as a peaceful uprising against the government of Bashar al-Assad, but it soon escalated into a full-scale civil war with multiple factions involved.

The Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS was an international coalition formed in 2014 to fight ISIS. The coalition included over 80 countries and organizations, including the United States, the United Kingdom, France, and Germany.

The United States was the last country to withdraw its troops from Afghanistan as part of the War on Terror. The U.S. military completed its withdrawal in August 2021, ending the longest war in American history.

The Patriot Act was a U.S. law passed in response to the 9/11 attacks. The law gave the government broad new powers to investigate and detain suspected terrorists.

The Department of Homeland Security was created in response to the 9/11 attacks. The department is responsible for coordinating and integrating the activities of various agencies involved in homeland security, including the FBI, the CIA, and the Coast Guard.

The Enhanced Interrogation Program was a U.S. program that authorized the use of enhanced interrogation techniques on suspected terrorists. The program was widely criticized for its use of torture and other inhumane methods.
