Theories of Emotion and Their Expression

The Facial Feedback Hypothesis proposes that facial expressions can influence emotional experience. When we make certain facial expressions, it can trigger corresponding emotional states.

The James-Lange Theory states that emotions are triggered by physiological responses to external stimuli. These physiological changes, such as increased heart rate or muscle tension, are interpreted as emotions.

Cognitive Appraisal Theory proposes that emotions are primarily influenced by our interpretation and evaluation of situations and events. Our thoughts and beliefs shape how we experience and express emotions.

The Two-Factor Theory of Emotion, proposed by Stanley Schachter and Jerome Singer, suggests that emotions are a combination of physiological arousal and cognitive interpretation of that arousal.
