Byzantine Emperors and Rulers

Justinian I, also known as Justinian the Great, is renowned for his extensive legal reforms, including the compilation of the Corpus Juris Civilis, a comprehensive collection of Roman law that had a lasting impact on legal systems across the world.

Heraclius was the first Byzantine emperor to officially adopt the title 'Basileus', marking a significant shift from the traditional Roman imperial titles. This change symbolized the empire's growing Hellenistic and Eastern influences.

Basil II, also known as Basil the Bulgar-Slayer, was a renowned military commander who expanded the Byzantine Empire's territories in the Balkans and the Middle East. His successful campaigns earned him the title 'Bulgar-Slayer' and solidified his reputation as one of the most successful Byzantine emperors.

Alexios IV Angelos was the emperor during the Fourth Crusade. His alliance with the crusaders led to the sack of Constantinople in 1204 and the establishment of the Latin Empire, which lasted until 1261.

Michael VIII Palaiologos led the Byzantine forces in the reconquest of Constantinople from the Latin Empire in 1261, restoring the Byzantine Empire and ending the Latin occupation.

Romanus IV Diogenes was the emperor during the Battle of Manzikert in 1071. The defeat of the Byzantine army by the Seljuk Turks at Manzikert weakened the empire and led to the loss of much of its eastern territories.
