Christopher Columbus was indeed the first European to encounter the cacao plant during his fourth voyage to the Americas in 1502. He encountered cacao beans but did not recognize their value as chocolate. Hernando Cortés later learned about chocolate from the Aztecs and is often credited with introducing it to Europe, but Columbus was the actual first European contact.
