Racial Differences in Homeownership

Redlining was a discriminatory practice by banks and mortgage lenders in which certain neighborhoods were deemed too risky for lending, often based on the racial composition of the residents. This practice made it difficult for Black and other minority families to obtain mortgages and purchase homes.

The homeownership rate for Black households in 2020 was 44.1%, significantly lower than the overall homeownership rate of 67.9%.

While the racial gap in homeownership rates can contribute to wealth inequality, higher rates of incarceration, and reduced access to affordable housing, it is not directly linked to lower rates of educational attainment.

Gentrification is the process by which historically Black neighborhoods become more affluent and attract new, often white residents. This can lead to displacement of existing residents and rising housing costs.
