The most widely accepted theory is that the sandwich was invented by John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, in the 18th century. He was a gambler and often asked for his food to be brought to him at the gaming table so that he could continue playing. He would order slices of meat between two pieces of bread, and this became known as a "sandwich".
