In the World Wide Web and search engines, search results are commonly called 'hits' - referring to the number of results matching a query. This terminology emerged from early search engines and represents each result as a 'hit' against the database. 'Records' and 'Ranks' are database terms, while 'Merits' is not standard web search terminology.

Archie (1990) was the first search tool for the pre-web Internet, specifically designed to index FTP (File Transfer Protocol) archives. It was created by Alan Emtage at McGill University. Overture, Baidu, and AltaVista came later - AltaVista was a web search engine (1995), not a pre-web tool.

In 2004, Microsoft transitioned to its own search technology powered by MSNBot, their proprietary web crawler. This marked Microsoft's move away from relying on other search providers. 'msnsearch,' 'msnlive,' and 'msn' were service/brand names, not the crawler technology itself.

Robert Cailliau, who collaborated with Tim Berners-Lee, designed the Web's historic logo. Cailliau was a key figure in developing the World Wide Web at CERN. Steve Ballmer (Microsoft CEO), Mark McCahill (gopher protocol), and Matthew Gray (early web tools) were not involved in the WWW logo design.

Yahoo! Inc. is headquartered in Sunnyvale, California, in Silicon Valley. The company was founded there by Jerry Yang and David Filo in 1994. Virginia, Chicago, and New York are not Yahoo's headquarters location, though they may have offices in some of these cities.

Google was founded by Larry Page and Sergey Brin in 1998 while they were Ph.D. students at Stanford. They developed the PageRank algorithm that became the foundation of Google's search technology.

MSN Search was launched by Microsoft in 1998 as part of their MSN network of services. It was later rebranded multiple times before becoming Bing.

Yahoo acquired Inktomi Corporation in 2002 for approximately $235 million. Inktomi's search technology helped improve Yahoo's search capabilities as they competed with Google in the early 2000s.
