Printmaking Processes

Relief printing is a printmaking process where the artist carves a design into a raised surface, such as a wooden block or linoleum sheet. Ink is then applied to the raised areas, and the surface is pressed onto paper to transfer the image.

Intaglio printing involves carving a design into a metal plate, creating recessed areas that hold ink. When the plate is inked and printed, the ink is transferred from the recessed areas to the paper, creating the image.

Lithography is based on the principle that water and oil repel each other. The artist draws the image on a flat stone with a greasy crayon, which creates areas that repel water. When the stone is dampened with water, the greasy areas repel the water and accept ink, while the non-greasy areas accept water and repel ink. This allows the artist to create an image on the stone that can be transferred to paper.

Screen printing involves creating a stencil on a mesh screen, which is then exposed to light. The exposed areas of the screen harden, while the unexposed areas remain open. Ink is then applied to the screen, and a squeegee is used to push the ink through the open areas of the screen, creating an image on the paper.

Screen printing is known for its ability to produce multiple colors in a single print. This is achieved by creating separate screens for each color, and then printing each screen in succession, allowing the colors to overlap and create new hues.
