Gender and Dance in Research

Gender performativity is a term coined by Judith Butler to describe the ways in which gender is not a fixed or essential characteristic, but rather a performance that is enacted and repeated through social interactions, including dance.

Dance can be used as a tool to challenge and subvert traditional gender roles and stereotypes in a variety of ways, including by presenting alternative representations of gender, creating opportunities for gender-bending performances, and exploring the fluidity and complexity of gender identities.
