Operating Systems Commands Quiz: Windows, Unix/Linux, and VMS

The /opt directory is the standard location for optional software packages in Unix/Linux systems. It's designed to hold add-on applications that are not part of the base system installation.

The SYS command transfers system files (IO.SYS and MSDOS.SYS in DOS) to a disk's boot sector, making it bootable. XCOPY and COPY copy files but don't create boot sectors, while ATTRIB only modifies file attributes. The SYS command specifically creates a bootable disk.

FDISK is the DOS utility used for creating, deleting, and managing disk partitions. FORMAT prepares existing partitions for use but cannot create or delete them, DISKPART is a more modern Windows command-line tool, and DEBUG is a low-level assembly debugger. FDISK is the classic partition management tool.

In MS-DOS and early Windows systems, the command FORMAT A: /S formats the floppy disk in drive A and copies the system files (IO.SYS, MSDOS.SYS, and COMMAND.COM) to make it bootable.

In MS-DOS and Windows command line, /? is the standard switch to display help information for any command. For example, typing "DIR /?" shows all options for the DIR command. The -help and /help syntaxes are used in other systems (like Unix/Linux), not MS-DOS.

XCOPY is indeed a more powerful version of the COPY command in MS-DOS/Windows, capable of copying entire directory trees, preserving file attributes, and copying subdirectories. MOVE only relocates files without copying, MV is a Unix command, and ROBOCOPY is a more modern Windows tool introduced later.

SETUP.EXE is the standard executable file used to initiate the installation of Windows operating systems from installation media containing cabinet (.cab) files or CD-ROMs.

The legacy MS-DOS utility FDISK with the /MBR switch rewrites the Master Boot Record of the primary hard disk without altering the partition table, which is a classic method to clear out MBR-infecting viruses.

bootcfg is a Windows command-line tool for modifying boot.ini, the file controlling boot options for Windows XP and earlier. It can add, remove, or modify boot entries. Option B is not a valid command. sfc (System File Checker) repairs system files but not specifically boot.ini. Option D is fictional.
