Earth is called the Blue Planet because approximately 71% of its surface is covered by oceans. When viewed from space, the dominant blue color of water is what gives Earth its distinctive blue appearance, unlike Mars (red from iron oxide) or the descriptive but unused 'green' or 'white' planet labels.
