Unix System Administration: AIX and HP-UX

HP Superdome 1U servers were high-end UNIX servers designed for mission-critical workloads. The 1U chassis was specifically engineered to support up to 32 processors in a highly available configuration. Options A (15), B (41), and D (25) don't match the actual specifications of Superdome 1U systems.

RAID 0 (striping) provides NO redundancy - data is split across disks without parity or mirroring. If a single disk fails, all data is lost. Hot swap capability is only meaningful in redundant RAID levels (1, 5, 6, 10) where a failed disk can be replaced without data loss. In RAID 0, hot swap doesn't protect against data loss.

The arp -a command displays the ARP (Address Resolution Protocol) cache, which shows IP-to-MAC address mappings for recently communicated network devices. This is the standard way to view MAC addresses of network interfaces and remote systems. Options B, C, and D have incorrect command syntax or don't exist.

HP-UX traditionally uses HFS (HFS file system) for boot disks. The boot block, which contains the bootstrap loader, is created within the HFS filesystem structure. JFS (Journal File System), NFS (Network File System), and ZFS (Zettabyte File System) are not used for creating HP-UX boot blocks - they serve different purposes or are from different operating systems.

CIFS (Common Internet File System) is the standard file system protocol used in NAS for file sharing, especially with Windows clients. It runs over TCP/IP and allows network-attached storage to share files as if they were local.

The bdf -I command (HP-UX) displays file system disk usage with inode information, showing inode consumption across mounted filesystems. While Linux uses 'df -i' for this purpose, bdf is the HP-UX equivalent.

The Itanium processor uses EPIC (Explicitly Parallel Instruction Computing) architecture, which enables parallel instruction execution through compiler-level parallelism detection, unlike RISC or CISC architectures.

The /etc/resolv.conf file stores DNS nameserver IP addresses (e.g., 'nameserver 8.8.8.8'), not hostnames. This is the correct answer for what resides in resolv.conf.

CIFS (Common Internet File System) is the standard file system protocol used in NAS for file sharing, particularly with Windows clients. It enables network-attached storage devices to share files over TCP/IP networks.

The bdf -I command is used on HP-UX systems to display disk usage statistics including inode consumption. On Linux, the equivalent is 'df -i', but bdf is the correct tool for HP-UX inode monitoring.

Itanium uses EPIC (Explicitly Parallel Instruction Computing) architecture, where the compiler identifies and schedules parallel operations explicitly. PA-RISC is a different RISC architecture used by HP, while HBA and SCSI are storage/host bus adapter interfaces, not processor types.

In AIX, group names must start with an alphabetic character (letter) and can contain letters, numbers, hyphens, and underscores. 'apps-2' is valid because it starts with a letter. '2-apps' is invalid (starts with number). 'rn_1' appears valid, but may be rejected depending on specific AIX version rules. 'staff#2' is invalid due to the '#' special character. Group names follow specific naming conventions in AIX user management.

The 'shutdown -Fm' command reboots an AIX system into maintenance mode. The -F flag performs a fast reboot without filesystem synchronization checks, and -m specifies maintenance mode. 'init 0' halts the system (note: should be 'init 0' not 'init0'). 'reboot -m' and 'bosboot -ad' are not the correct commands for entering maintenance mode during a reboot.

AIX implements VLAN support based on the IEEE 802.1Q standard, which is the industry-standard protocol for VLAN tagging on Ethernet networks. Layer 2 VLAN and port-based VLAN are general concepts but not specific AIX implementations. Policy-based VLAN is a different approach. The IEEE 802.1Q standard allows AIX to interoperate with other 802.1Q-compliant network devices.

The 'lslpp' (List Installed LPP) command displays a list of all installed AIX software packages and filesets. 'installp' is for installing software. 'lppchk' verifies the integrity of installed software but doesn't list them. 'ipstat' is not a standard AIX command. Lslpp provides comprehensive information about installed software on an AIX system.

/etc/rmtab is the NFS server file that tracks which clients currently have mounted filesystems. /etc/mnttab shows local mounts, /etc/fstab configures mounts at boot, and /etc/exports defines what can be exported.
