Angola's official currency is the kwanza, abbreviated as AOA. Introduced in 1977 after independence from Portugal, it replaced the Angolan escudo. The kwanza is subdivided into 100 centimos, though inflation has made centimos virtually obsolete. The currency is named after the Kwanza River, Angola's longest river.
