Sustainable Development Goals and Indicators

Economic Growth is not a Sustainable Development Goal. The SDGs are a set of 17 goals adopted by all United Nations member states in 2015, which are intended to be achieved by 2030.

The primary objective of SDG 1: No Poverty is to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger. This includes reducing the number of people living in extreme poverty by at least half, and reducing the number of people suffering from hunger by at least half.

Prevalence of overweight and obesity is not an indicator of SDG 2: Zero Hunger. The indicators of SDG 2 are focused on measuring the prevalence of undernourishment, stunting, and wasting in children under 5 years of age.

The target of SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being for reducing the global maternal mortality ratio is to reduce the global maternal mortality ratio to less than 70 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births.

Number of out-of-school children is not an indicator of SDG 4: Quality Education. The indicators of SDG 4 are focused on measuring the net enrollment rate, completion rate, and literacy rate.

The target of SDG 5: Gender Equality and Empower All Women and Girls for eliminating all forms of violence against women and girls is to eliminate all forms of violence against women and girls in the public and private spheres, including trafficking and sexual and other types of exploitation.

Percentage of population practicing open defecation is not an indicator of SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation. The indicators of SDG 6 are focused on measuring the percentage of population using safely managed drinking water and sanitation services, and the percentage of wastewater safely treated.

The target of SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy for increasing the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix is to increase the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix to 20%.

Gross domestic product (GDP) per capita is not an indicator of SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth. The indicators of SDG 8 are focused on measuring the unemployment rate, underemployment rate, and labor force participation rate.

The target of SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure for increasing the share of manufacturing in the global gross domestic product (GDP) is to increase the share of manufacturing in the global GDP to 20%.

Palma ratio is not an indicator of SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities. The indicators of SDG 10 are focused on measuring the Gini coefficient, share of income or expenditure of the poorest 20%, and share of income or expenditure of the richest 20%.

The target of SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities for reducing the proportion of urban population living in slums is to reduce the proportion of urban population living in slums to less than 10%.

Carbon footprint per capita is not an indicator of SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production. The indicators of SDG 12 are focused on measuring the material footprint, ecological footprint, and water footprint per capita.

The target of SDG 13: Climate Action for limiting global warming to well below 2 degrees Celsius, preferably to 1.5 degrees Celsius, compared to pre-industrial levels is to limit global warming to well below 2 degrees Celsius, preferably to 1.5 degrees Celsius, compared to pre-industrial levels.

Microplastics in the ocean is not an indicator of SDG 14: Life Below Water. The indicators of SDG 14 are focused on measuring marine protected areas, fish stocks within biologically sustainable levels, and ocean acidification.
