SCSI Interface and Architecture

SCSI-1 defined three primary layers: Application Layer (initiates commands), SCSI Command Layer (encapsulates CDBs), and SCSI Protocol Layer (handles signaling). The Programming Interface Layer was NOT formally defined in SCSI-1. This layer, which provides standardized APIs for applications to interact with SCSI devices, was introduced in later SCSI specifications (SCSI-2 and beyond). SCSI-1 focused on basic command and protocol definitions without formal programming interface standards.

SCSI command lengths are defined by group codes in the command descriptor block opcode. Group 0 commands are 6 bytes, Groups 1 and 2 are 10 bytes, and Group 5 commands are 12 bytes. Therefore, a 12-byte CDB belongs to Group 5. Other groups correspond to different lengths.

In SCSI architecture, the I_T_L_Q nexus represents the relationship between Initiator, Target, Logical Unit, and (Queue Tag). I = Initiator (the host adapter that starts commands), T = Target (the SCSI device controller), L = Logical Unit (specific addressable unit like a disk), Q = Command Queue Tag (used for tagged command queuing to manage multiple outstanding commands). The queue tag enables out-of-order command execution and optimization in SCSI devices that support command queuing.

SCSI-2 Wide SCSI doubles the data bus width from 8-bit (narrow) to 16-bit, allowing faster data transfer. Narrow SCSI uses an 8-bit bus, while Wide SCSI extends this to 16 bits. The 32-bit and 64-bit options were not part of the SCSI-2 standard.

The SCSI architectural model for distributed communication comprises exactly three layers: the SCSI Application Layer (client commands), SCSI Transport Layer (transport services), and Interconnect Layer (physical transport). Since all three options A, B, and C are valid layers in the standard SCSI model, the correct answer is 'None of the Above' - there is no fourth layer that would make any of these incorrect.

By default, SCSI devices initialize communication using asynchronous data transfer because it requires no negotiation or hardware capability agreement. If both devices support synchronous transfer, they negotiate it during the startup phase. Asynchronous is the default fall-back state for compatibility.

A Logical Unit Number serves as a unique identifier for addressing specific logical units within a SCSI target device. While LUN does contain 'Number' in its acronym and refers to a Logical Unit, its fundamental purpose is identification and addressing. The LUN allows the initiator to distinguish between multiple logical units on the same physical device.

When a SCSI target device disconnects from the bus during an I/O operation (commonly to seek data), it must use the Reselection phase to regain control and complete the transaction. The target initiates reselection to resume communication with the initiator. Bus Free indicates no device ownership, Selection is for initial target choice, and Message In handles status transmission.

The operation code in a SCSI Command Descriptor Block is exactly 1 byte (8 bits) in length, which defines the specific command being executed. This single byte can encode up to 256 different SCSI commands. The remaining bytes in the CDB contain parameters and arguments for the command.

SCSI commands return a Status Code byte to indicate whether the command completed successfully or encountered an error. The Status Code is the primary mechanism for determining command outcome - GOOD indicates success, while CHECK CONDITION signals an error that requires reading Sense Data for details. Check Condition is one specific status code, not the general mechanism, and KCQ is not a standard SCSI term.

The SCSI Architecture Model represents an I/O system as a SCSI Domain, which encompasses the complete set of SCSI devices, application clients, and their interconnections. A SCSI Device is an individual component within the domain, while the Service Delivery Subsystem handles the actual transport. The domain concept provides a complete logical view of the I/O system.

The Service Delivery Subsystem resides at the Interconnect Layer in the SCSI architectural model, handling the physical and logical transport of data between devices. The Application Layer handles client commands, and the Transport Layer provides transport services, while the Interconnect Layer implements the actual delivery mechanism through the SDS.

Fast SCSI employs synchronous data transfer mode, which allows higher throughput by using a continuous clock signal rather than per-transfer handshakes. Asynchronous transfer requires acknowledgment for each data phase, limiting speed. The synchronous mode enabled Fast SCSI to achieve 10 MB/s transfer rates compared to 5 MB/s for earlier asynchronous SCSI.

CDB stands for Command Descriptor Block. It is the standardized structure used to send SCSI commands from an initiator to a target. Terms like Command Definition Block, Computer Definition Block, and Command Dispatch Block are incorrect distractors that do not represent this standard protocol terminology.

Early SCSI implementations (SCSI-1 and SCSI-2) use a simple single-bit parity check (even or odd) on the 8-bit or 16-bit parallel data bus for error detection. Cyclic Redundancy Check (CRC) was introduced later in the SCSI-3 standard to handle higher speeds. Parity is the correct traditional method.

SCSI-3 employs Cyclic Redundancy Check (CRC) for robust error detection of data transferred on the bus, replacing the simpler single-bit parity used in SCSI-1 and SCSI-2. CRC can detect multiple bit errors and provides better data integrity protection. Parity was the legacy method, while CRC is the modern standard.

In SCSI communication, the initiator starts transactions and requests operations. The target receives these requests and executes the commands. Since the device in the prompt waits for commands without initiating sessions, it acts as the target. LUNs and logical units represent actual addressing sub-entities within a target.

SCSI stands for Small Computer System Interface, which is a set of standards for physically connecting and transferring data between computers and peripheral devices. The other options are fabricated terms designed to look similar.
