World War I and World War II: The Role of Women

During World War I, millions of women entered the workforce to replace men who had been called to fight. Many of these women worked in factories, producing munitions and other supplies for the war effort.

Women typically did not serve as infantry soldiers during World War II. However, they did serve in a variety of other roles, including nurses, pilots, mechanics, and intelligence officers.

The primary mission of the WAC was to perform administrative and support duties, such as typing, filing, and operating switchboards. This allowed male soldiers to be deployed to combat roles.
