Forms of Corruption

Lobbying is a legal activity that involves trying to influence politicians or government officials to make decisions in favor of a particular group or interest.

Bribery is the most common form of corruption in India. It involves offering or accepting money or other valuable considerations to influence the actions of a public official.

Bribery is voluntary in the sense that the person offering the bribe is not forced to do so. Extortion, on the other hand, is forced in the sense that the person demanding the bribe threatens to harm the person if they do not comply.

Nepotism is the practice of favoring one's relatives or friends in employment or other opportunities.

Cronyism is the practice of using one's position or influence to secure advantages for one's friends.

Nepotism involves favoring one's relatives while cronyism involves favoring one's friends.

Corruption leads to lower economic growth because it discourages investment, reduces productivity, and increases uncertainty.

Corruption leads to higher poverty because it diverts resources away from public services and programs that benefit the poor.

Corruption undermines democracy because it erodes public trust in government, weakens the rule of law, and makes it more difficult for citizens to hold their leaders accountable.
