Horses can sleep standing up due to a specialized stay apparatus in their legs that allows them to lock their knees without muscular effort. This ability helps them escape predators quickly. While elephants can doze while standing, they lie down for deep REM sleep. Giraffes also sleep very briefly while standing but need to lie down for proper rest.
