Kerala State and 2008 Mumbai Attacks

Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) was the main terrorist organization behind the 26/11 Mumbai attacks. The Pakistan-based militant group planned, trained, and executed the coordinated strikes. While other groups have carried out attacks in India, LeT was specifically responsible for this operation.

Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan of the NSG was martyred during Operation Black Tornado at the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel. He was leading his team to rescue trapped guests when he was shot by terrorists. While other officers also sacrificed their lives, Unnikrishnan was awarded the Ashoka Chakra for his bravery.

David Coleman Headley, born as Dawood Sayyed Gilani, changed his name in 2006. He was an American terrorist of Pakistani origin who conducted reconnaissance for the Mumbai attacks. His name change helped him travel between India, Pakistan, and the US without raising suspicions.

Nine terrorists were killed during the 26/11 Mumbai attacks. Ajmal Kasab was the only attacker captured alive. The ten militants who arrived from Karachi divided into teams; nine died during operations and one was apprehended. This excludes the handlers in Pakistan who coordinated remotely.

Multiple politicians resigned following public outrage over the 26/11 attacks. Vilasrao Deshmukh (Maharashtra CM), Shivraj Patil (Union Home Minister), and R.R. Patil (Maharashtra Deputy CM) all stepped down accepting moral responsibility for security failures. The coordinated resignations reflected the magnitude of the tragedy.

Despite being published in Malayalam (regional language), it has the highest circulation among all weeklies in India. Deshabhimani, Mathrubhoomi, and Kerala Kaumudi are also Malayalam publications but have lower circulation.

The Nehru Trophy Boat Race is Kerala's most prestigious snake boat competition held annually in the backwaters of Alleppey. It was established in 1952 to commemorate Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru's visit to Kerala. Kerala's famous backwaters are a unique geographical feature - a network of interconnected lakes, canals, estuaries and rivers with narrow strips of land (called 'ezhara') in between. They are not just lakes, islands or rivers individually, but a complex lagoon ecosystem formed by 38 rivers and their tributaries flowing into the Arabian Sea.
