The History of Family Law

In ancient Rome, family law was primarily concerned with promoting family stability and maintaining the traditional roles of husband and wife.

The legal principle of coverture, which originated in English common law, established the husband's authority over the wife and children. Under coverture, the wife's legal identity was merged with her husband's, and she had limited rights to own property or enter into contracts.
