The Tragedy of the Commons is a situation in which multiple individuals, acting independently and rationally according to their own self-interest, will ultimately deplete a shared resource even when it is in their collective interest to conserve it. This is because each individual has an incentive to use the resource as much as possible, even if it means that the resource will be depleted in the long run.
