Economic Anthropology and Ethnicity

Economic Anthropology is a branch of anthropology that focuses on the study of economic behavior and decision-making in different societies, including the production, distribution, and consumption of goods and services.

Traditional economic systems are typically characterized by barter and exchange as primary means of transaction, strong emphasis on social relationships and reciprocity, and limited specialization and division of labor. The emphasis on maximizing profit and accumulation of wealth is a characteristic of modern capitalist economies.

Inter-Ethnic Exchange refers to the exchange of goods and services between different ethnic groups, often involving the sharing of cultural practices, technologies, and resources.

The introduction of new agricultural techniques from one region to another is an example of a cultural exchange that has influenced economic practices, as it can lead to increased productivity and changes in farming methods.

Ethnicity can impact economic opportunities and outcomes for individuals through discrimination and prejudice in hiring and promotion practices, by influencing access to education and skill development opportunities, and through the formation of ethnic enclaves and networks that provide economic support.
