Opera originated in Florence, Italy, in the late 16th century.

Claudio Monteverdi is considered the father of opera, thanks to his groundbreaking work "Orfeo", which was first performed in 1607.

The Teatro San Cassiano in Venice was the first public opera house, opening its doors in 1637.
