The Contemporary Ideal of Childhood emerged in the early 21st century and emphasizes the importance of recognizing and responding to the diverse needs of children in a globalized world.

Children in the 21st century face a number of challenges, including poverty and inequality, climate change and environmental degradation, rapid technological change, and increasing social and political instability.

Children in the 21st century also have a number of opportunities, including access to education and information, opportunities for global citizenship, increased awareness of children's rights, and growing recognition of the importance of childhood.
