The Guardian switched from broadsheet to Berliner format in 2005, making it the first national newspaper in the UK to use this European format. Berliner (470 × 315 mm) is intermediate between the traditional broadsheet size and the smaller tabloid format. Broadsheet is the largest traditional newspaper size, while tabloid is half that size - Berliner offers a practical compromise.
