Reforms of Peacekeeping

Resolution 65/283, adopted in 2010, established the HIPPO to conduct a comprehensive review of UN peace operations and make recommendations for their improvement.

The HIPPO report focused on identifying ways to improve the effectiveness of peacekeeping operations, including by strengthening their mandates, improving their coordination with other actors, and ensuring that they have the necessary resources.

The HIPPO report did not recommend reducing the number of peacekeeping operations. Instead, it called for a more effective and efficient use of resources.

MINUSMA (Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali) was established in 2013 to support the implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement in Mali.

Disarming and demobilizing armed groups is not a key feature of MINUSMA's mandate. This task is typically carried out by national security forces.
