Government Policies on Astronomy Education and Outreach

The Department of Science and Technology (DST) is the nodal agency of the Government of India for promoting astronomy education and outreach in the country.

The DST's flagship programs for promoting astronomy education and outreach include the Astronomy Awareness Program, Vigyan Prasar, and the National Council of Science Museums (NCSM).

The Astronomy Awareness Program aims to create awareness about astronomy among the general public, promote astronomy education in schools and colleges, and develop astronomy-related educational resources. It does not support research in astronomy.

The NCF includes astronomy as an elective subject at the secondary school level.

The RTE guarantees the right to free and compulsory education for all children between the ages of 6 and 14.

Lack of qualified teachers, lack of resources, and negative attitudes towards science are all challenges faced by astronomy education and outreach in India. Lack of government support is not a challenge.
