Sports Infrastructure for Persons with Disabilities in India

The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports is the nodal agency responsible for promoting sports among persons with disabilities in India. It formulates policies, provides funding, and coordinates with various stakeholders to create an enabling environment for sports participation by persons with disabilities.

The first National Games for Persons with Disabilities were held in New Delhi in 1999. The games were organized by the Paralympic Committee of India and featured participation from over 1,000 athletes with disabilities from across the country.

The Accessible Sports Infrastructure Scheme was launched by the Government of India in 2015 to provide financial assistance for the construction of sports infrastructure that is accessible to persons with disabilities. The scheme aims to create inclusive sports facilities that enable persons with disabilities to participate in sports and recreational activities.

Devendra Jhajharia is an Indian javelin thrower with a disability who has won the most Paralympic medals among Indian athletes. He has won two gold medals, two silver medals, and one bronze medal at the Paralympic Games.
