Semantics and Pragmatics

Semantics is the branch of linguistics that studies the meaning of words, phrases, and sentences.

Synonymy (words with similar meanings), antonymy (words with opposite meanings), and hyponymy (words that are more specific than other words) are all examples of semantic relations.

Pragmatics is the branch of linguistics that studies how language is used in context, including the speaker's intention, the hearer's interpretation, and the social and cultural context of the interaction.

Deixis (words that refer to the speaker, hearer, or context), presupposition (information that is assumed to be true in a conversation), and implicature (information that is communicated indirectly) are all examples of pragmatic phenomena.

Implicature is the meaning of a word or phrase that is not explicitly stated but is implied by the context.

Stating a fact, asking a question, and making a request are all examples of speech acts, which are actions that are performed through language.

Syntax is the branch of linguistics that studies the rules that govern how words and phrases can be combined to form sentences.

A noun must agree with its verb in number, a sentence must have a subject and a verb, and a preposition must be followed by a noun phrase are all examples of syntactic rules.

Anthropological linguistics is the branch of linguistics that studies the relationship between language and culture.
