Government Policies on Astronomy and the Environment

The Department of Space (DoS) is the nodal agency of the Government of India responsible for all matters relating to space, including astronomy and space science.

The Tandon Committee, formed in 1961, was tasked with reviewing the status of astronomy in India and recommending measures for its development. Its recommendations led to the establishment of several observatories and institutions dedicated to astronomical research.
