World Geography and Superlatives

Dalol (Danakil Depression) in Ethiopia is one of the hottest inhabited places on Earth, with average annual temperatures around 34-35°C (93-95°F). It sits in a volcanic depression below sea level. Thar and Sahara deserts are extremely hot but have cooler winters. Kigali has a temperate highland climate.

Antarctica is the coldest continent on Earth, with the lowest recorded temperature of -89.2°C (-128.6°F) at Vostok Station. Drass is one of the coldest inhabited places in India. The Arctic region is cold but not as extreme as Antarctica. Dalol is actually the hottest place.

Mawsynram in Meghalaya, India is the wettest place on Earth with average annual rainfall of about 11,871 mm (467 inches). The other options (Tugela, Honshu, Nova Scotia) receive significant rainfall but nowhere near Mawsynram's levels. Its location in the Khasi Hills creates orographic rainfall.

The Atacama Desert in Chile is the driest non-polar desert on Earth, with some areas receiving less than 1 mm of rain per year and going decades without rainfall. The Sahara and Thar deserts are arid but receive more rainfall. Rangipo Desert in New Zealand is relatively moist.

Angel Falls (Salto Ángel) in Venezuela is the highest waterfall in the world at 979 meters (3,212 feet). Tugela Falls is the second highest. Yosemite and Mardalsfossen are impressive but not record holders. Angel Falls drops from Auyán-tepui mountain.

Hells Canyon on the Idaho-Oregon border (USA) is the deepest gorge in North America at 2,410 meters (7,993 feet) deep. The Grand Canyon is the largest by volume but not the deepest. Charyn Canyon is in Kazakhstan. Tspango appears to be a misspelling or non-standard reference.

The Great Barrier Reef off Queensland, Australia is the world's largest coral reef system, visible from space and stretching over 2,300 km. Belize Barrier Reef is the second largest. New Caledonia and Tubbataha are significant but much smaller. It's a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Justice Anna Chandy was the first woman judge of a High Court in India. She was appointed to the Kerala High Court in 1959, breaking gender barriers in the Indian judiciary. Fathima Beevi was the first woman Supreme Court judge (1989), not High Court. Aarti Sinha is not associated with judiciary landmarks.

Lord Canning became the first Viceroy in 1858 when the Government of India Act transferred power from the East India Company to the British Crown after the 1857 rebellion. Lord Ripon and Bentinck served earlier as Governors-General, not Viceroys, while Mountbatten was the last Viceroy in 1947.

The Bengal Gazette (also called Hicky's Gazette), founded by James Augustus Hicky in 1780, is recognized as India's first newspaper. The Bombay Samachar (1822) was the first Indian-language newspaper, Samachar Darpan (1819) came later, and The Statesman (1875) is a much more recent publication.
