Legal Status of Astronauts

The Outer Space Treaty, formally known as the Treaty on Principles Governing the Activities of States in the Exploration and Use of Outer Space, including the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies, is the primary international treaty governing the activities of astronauts in outer space.

The Liability Convention, formally known as the Convention on International Liability for Damage Caused by Space Objects, is an international treaty that governs the liability of states for damage caused by space objects.

The Liability Convention contains a number of provisions, including a system for determining liability for damage caused by space objects, limits on the amount of liability that states can be held responsible for, and the creation of a fund to compensate victims of damage caused by space objects.

As of 2023, the Liability Convention has been signed and ratified by the United States, Russia, China, and a number of other countries.

There are a number of challenges to the legal status of astronauts, including the lack of a comprehensive international treaty governing the activities of astronauts, the different interpretations of existing international treaties by different countries, and the emergence of private space companies.
