Moon and Eclipse Facts

Lunar eclipses occur when the Earth passes between the Sun and Moon, casting its shadow on the Moon. This alignment can only happen during a full moon, when the Sun, Earth, and Moon are in a straight line with Earth in the middle. At other moon phases, the alignment required for an eclipse is not possible.

Solar and lunar eclipses occur in pairs about two weeks apart because the Moon must be near a lunar node for eclipses to occur. During the eclipse season (about 34 days), when the Sun is near a node, any new moon will cause a solar eclipse and any full moon will cause a lunar eclipse. Since lunar phases are about 29.5 days apart, both conditions can be met within the eclipse season.

Solar eclipses can ONLY occur during a NEW moon, not a full moon. During a solar eclipse, the Moon passes between Earth and the Sun, blocking the Sun's light - this alignment only happens when the moon is new (dark side facing Earth). A full moon would put the Moon on the opposite side of Earth from the Sun, making a solar eclipse impossible.

The maximum number of lunar eclipses in a calendar year is typically 3, though rarely 4 can occur (including penumbral eclipses). This happens when the eclipse seasons are favorably positioned relative to the calendar year. The minimum is 0, and 2 is common, but 3 is the scientifically accepted maximum for most educational purposes.

The eclipse cycle repeats every 18.6 years due to the precession of the lunar nodes. This is the Saros cycle period. The nodes (points where the Moon's orbit crosses the ecliptic) rotate slowly backward, completing a full cycle in approximately 18.6 years. This is why similar eclipses occur at this interval.

The lunar cycle (time between full moons) is approximately 29.5 days, which is longer than February's 28 or 29 days. In years where the full moon occurs very early in January, the next full moon may not happen until March, resulting in a February with no full moon. Other months are long enough to always contain at least one full moon.

Bailly crater is one of the largest craters on the Moon's near side (visible from Earth), with a diameter of approximately 303 kilometers. It is located near the southwestern limb of the Moon. Copernicus is also a prominent crater but much smaller at around 93 kilometers.

The Moon's orbit around Earth is elliptical, not circular, following Kepler's First Law. The Moon's distance from Earth varies between perigee (closest) and apogee (farthest). While the orbit appears nearly circular, it has an eccentricity of approximately 0.0549.

The Moon's speed varies throughout its elliptical orbit - faster at perigee (closest to Earth) and slower at apogee (farthest). This follows Kepler's Second Law, which states that a line from the Moon to Earth sweeps equal areas in equal time intervals, requiring the Moon to speed up when closer to Earth.

The Moon has no atmosphere, wind, or water to erode surface features, and minimal geological activity. Footprints and other disturbances will only fade due to micrometeorite bombardment, which occurs on timescales of millions of years. 10 million years is a reasonable estimate for how long they would remain visible.

The Moon is tidally locked to Earth, meaning its rotational period (27.3 days) exactly matches its orbital period (27.3 days). This is why we always see the same side of the Moon from Earth. This synchronous rotation is a common phenomenon in celestial mechanics.

A lunar halo is an optical phenomenon created when moonlight is refracted (bent) by hexagonal ice crystals suspended in Earth's upper atmosphere. The crystals act like prisms, bending the light at a 22-degree angle to create a luminous ring around the Moon. It is not created by the Moon's atmosphere (which is negligible).

The Moon's gravity is approximately 1/6th (about 16.6%) of Earth's gravity. This is because the Moon has much less mass than Earth - about 1/81th of Earth's mass. On the Moon, objects weigh much less, which is why astronauts could jump much higher and carry heavier equipment easily.
