Sleeping Murder was published in 1976, shortly after Agatha Christie's death in January 1976. Christie had written this novel earlier but intentionally left it for posthumous publication. ABC Murders (1936), Elephants Can Remember (1972), and Poirot Loses a Client (also known as Dumb Witness, 1937) were all published during her lifetime.

Hercule Poirot, Agatha Christie's famous fictional detective, is explicitly stated to be from Belgium in the original stories. He is a retired Belgian police officer who fled to England during World War I, which is a key part of his character background.
