Strawberries are the only common fruit where the seeds (achenes) are on the outside surface. What appears to be a red fruit is actually the receptacle (swollen stem tip), and the tiny seeds on the surface are the actual fruits (achenes) from the plant's ovaries. This is unique among commonly consumed fruits.
