Sirius Black is an Animagus who can transform into a large black dog, specifically resembling a Grim (an omen of death in wizarding folklore). His transformed form is affectionately called 'Padfoot' by his friends the other Marauders. This is central to the plot of Prisoner of Azkaban. He does not transform into a wolf (that would be a werewolf like Remus Lupin), grindylows (which are water demons), or a phoenix (which is Dumbledore's companion Fawkes).
