Rationalism and Empiricism

Rationalism is a philosophical school of thought that emphasizes the primacy of reason and innate ideas in acquiring knowledge. It holds that certain truths are self-evident and can be known through reason alone, without the need for sensory experience.

Empiricism is a philosophical school of thought that emphasizes the primacy of sensory experience and observation in acquiring knowledge. It holds that all knowledge is derived from experience and that reason alone is not sufficient for acquiring knowledge.

René Descartes was a rationalist philosopher who argued that the existence of God can be proven through reason alone. He famously stated, 'Cogito, ergo sum' (I think, therefore I am), which he believed was the only indubitable truth from which all other knowledge could be derived.
