Error Coins

Off-center strikes occur when the coin is not properly aligned in the dies before it is struck. This can result in the coin being struck off-center, with part of the design missing.

Double strikes occur when a coin is struck twice by the dies, either because the coin was not properly ejected from the dies after the first strike or because the dies were not properly aligned.

Missing clad layers occur when the outer layer of a clad coin, typically copper or nickel, is missing. This can happen if the coin was not properly clad or if the outer layer was worn away.

Broadstrikes occur when a coin is struck by a die that is too large, resulting in the coin being wider than normal.

Die cracks occur when a die develops a crack, either from wear or from being struck by a hard object. Die cracks can cause errors on coins, such as lines or breaks in the design.

Cud errors occur when a piece of metal, such as a piece of solder or a piece of another coin, is stuck to a die. This can cause errors on coins, such as raised areas or extra details.

Overstrikes occur when a coin is struck by a die that has been used to strike another coin. This can result in the design of the first coin being superimposed on the design of the second coin.

Mule errors occur when a coin is struck by a die that is intended for another coin. This can result in a coin with the design of one coin on one side and the design of another coin on the other side.

Transitional errors occur when a coin is struck by a die that is changing from one design to another. This can result in a coin with elements of both designs.

Repunched mintmarks occur when a mintmark is struck twice on a coin, either because the mintmark was not properly aligned or because the coin was struck twice.

Rotated reverses occur when the reverse of a coin is rotated relative to the obverse, either because the dies were not properly aligned or because the coin was struck twice.

Struck through errors occur when a coin is struck through a piece of foreign material, such as a piece of paper or a piece of cloth. This can result in the foreign material being embedded in the coin.

Clipped planchet errors occur when a planchet, the blank coin before it is struck, is clipped before it is struck. This can result in a coin that is smaller than normal.

Holed coins are coins that have a hole in them, either from being pierced or from being worn. Holed coins were often used as currency in the past, and they can be valuable to collectors today.

Counterstamped coins are coins that have been stamped with a mark after they were struck. This was often done to indicate that the coin was genuine or to change its value.
