Indian Rivers

The Ganga (Ganges) is the longest river entirely within India, flowing approximately 2,525 km. The Brahmaputra is longer overall but much of it flows through China and Bangladesh. The Indus is longer but largely flows through Pakistan.

Pandharpur, home to the Vitthal Rukmini temple, is situated on the banks of the Bhima River (also called Chandrabhaga). The Bhima is a major tributary of the Krishna River. Krishna itself flows further south in Maharashtra, while Cauvery and Godavari are in different regions entirely.

Narmada is one of the few major Indian rivers that flows west into the Arabian Sea. Krishna, Cauvery, and Mahanadi all flow eastward and drain into the Bay of Bengal. Narmada originates in Madhya Pradesh and flows through Gujarat before emptying into the Arabian Sea near Bharuch.

In Hindu mythology, Ganga is depicted as the daughter of Himavat (the personification of the Himalayas) and his wife Mena. This is why she is sometimes called Himavat's daughter or Himavati. Krishna, Godavari, and Kaveri have different mythological origins and parentage in Indian tradition.

The Ganga basin is the largest river basin in India, covering approximately 25% of the country's geographical area. It spans across 11 states and supports over 40% of India's population. The Indus basin, though historically significant, is now largely in Pakistan. Narmada and Brahmaputra have much smaller basin areas.

The Mahanadi River originates in the Sihawa mountain range near Dhamtari in present-day Chhattisgarh (historically part of Madhya Pradesh). Though it's famous for flowing through Odisha (formerly Orissa) and forming the Mahanadi Delta there, its source is in the Chhattisgarh region. Maharashtra, West Bengal, and Uttar Pradesh are not its origin states.

Godavari is a peninsular river that originates in the Western Ghats of Maharashtra and never flows through the Himalayan region. The Indus rises in Tibet near Mount Kailash, while Alaknanda and Bhagirathi are Himalayan rivers that join to form the Ganga. Godavari is the only option that is exclusively a peninsular/Deccan river.

The name 'India' is derived from the Indus River (called Sindhu in Sanskrit). Ancient Persian and Greek civilizations referred to the land east of the Indus as 'India' or 'Indoi'. The Ganga, Bhagirathi, and Krishna are major Indian rivers but did not give the country its name.

The Narmada River originates from the Maikal range, which is part of the Satpura range in central India. The Maikal range forms the boundary between the Malwa Plateau and the Deccan Plateau. Gomti and Ghaghra are Ganga tributaries from the Himalayas, while Brahmaputra originates in Tibet.

Surat is located on the banks of the Tapi River (also called Tapti) in Gujarat. The Tapi is one of the major rivers in central India and flows through the Surat district before emptying into the Arabian Sea. Hoogly is a distributary of the Ganga in West Bengal, Sabarmati flows through Ahmedabad, and Godavari is in peninsular India.

The Godavari River flows through Nashik in Maharashtra, originating from the nearby Trimbakeshwar (about 25km from Nashik). Nashik is one of the four cities where the Kumbh Mela is held, precisely because of its location on the Godavari. The Ganga, Gomti, and Tapi do not flow through Nashik.

The Bhar Chukki and Gagana Chukki Falls are the two segments of the famous Shivanasamudra Falls on the Kaveri River in Karnataka. These falls are among the earliest hydroelectric projects in Asia. The Narmada, Tungabhadra, and Krishna do not form these falls.
