Jammu and Kashmir contains India's highest point, K2 (Mount Godwin-Austen) at 8,611 meters, which is part of the Karakoram range near the China border. K2 is the second-highest peak in the world after Everest and is located in the India-administered territory of Ladakh (formerly part of J&K). While some sources might dispute this due to the region's complex geopolitical status, within the Indian context, J&K/Ladakh is recognized as housing this peak.

Rajasthan is India's largest state by area, covering approximately 342,239 square kilometers (about 10.4% of India's total area). Located in northwest India, it comprises the Thar Desert and features diverse terrain from arid regions to the Aravalli range. Rajasthan's vast size (larger than many countries) reflects its historical consolidation of various princely states. Its area significantly exceeds that of Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, or Andhra Pradesh.

Uttar Pradesh is India's most populous state with over 200 million people (approximately 17% of India's population). Its population exceeds that of many countries and stems from high historical fertility rates, dense agrarian communities in the Gangetic plain, and large urban centers. While Bihar and West Bengal are also densely populated, UP's total population far exceeds them. Maharashtra ranks fourth. The demographic weight makes UP politically significant with 80 Lok Sabha seats.

Delhi (National Capital Territory) has India's highest population density at approximately 11,297 persons per square kilometer. As a small urban territory with massive population, Delhi's density far exceeds that of any state. While Bihar (1,106) and West Bengal (1,029) are the densest states, and Chandigarh is a dense UT, Delhi's combination of small area (1,484 km²) and large population (~16.8 million) makes it the densest. The high density reflects Delhi's role as India's primary urban magnet and economic hub.

Puducherry, like Delhi, is a Union Territory with its own legislature and elected assembly, giving it state-like status. The other UTs listed (Daman and Diu, Chandigarh, Lakshadweep) do not have legislatures and are administered differently.

The name 'Sikkim' is derived from the Limbu words 'su' (new) and 'khyim' (palace or fortress), meaning 'new palace'. This refers to the palace built by the kingdom's founder. The other states' names have different linguistic origins - Tamil Nadu relates to the Tamil people, Haryana comes from 'Hariana' (greenery), and Punjab means 'land of five waters'.

Kanpur is Uttar Pradesh's largest city by population, with over 3 million residents. Lucknow is the state capital and second-largest, while Allahabad (Prayagraj) and Agra are major cities but smaller than Kanpur. Many students mistakenly assume the capital city (Lucknow) is the largest.

The name 'Assam' is derived from the Sanskrit word 'asama' meaning 'unequalled, peerless, or uneven'. This refers to the Ahom kings who ruled the region. The other distractors are incorrect - Bihar comes from 'Vihara' (monastery), Jharkhand means 'land of forests', and Puducherry is a Tamil name meaning 'new town'.

Arunachal Pradesh literally means 'land of the dawn-lit mountains' in Sanskrit - 'aruna' (dawn/red), 'achala' (mountain), and 'pradesha' (region/land). This name refers to it being the easternmost state of India, where the sun first rises. Kerala means 'land of coconuts', Punjab is 'land of five waters', and Daman and Diu are Portuguese-derived names.

The name 'Haryana' is derived from 'Hariana' (Hari + ana), meaning 'abode of God' or 'God's home'. The word 'Hari' refers to God (Vishnu). The other options don't match - Meghalaya means 'abode of clouds', Manipur translates to 'land of jewels', and Chandigarh is a named after the Chandi temple.

The name 'Kashmir' is believed to be derived from Sanskrit 'kashyapa-mira' or 'kashyapa-meru', meaning 'lake or mountain desiccated by water' - referring to the sage Kashyapa and the region's water bodies. The name evolved to 'Kashmir' over time. Punjab means 'land of five waters', Andaman is possibly from Hanuman, and Bihar comes from 'Vihara' (monastery).

The name 'Karnataka' is derived from the Kannada words 'karu' (lofty/elevated) and 'nadu' (land/region), meaning 'lofty land' or 'elevated country'. This refers to the Deccan Plateau's elevated geography. The other states' names have different origins - Kerala (land of coconuts), Tamil Nadu (land of Tamils), Goa (possibly from cow pasture or river Gomantak).

The name 'Kerala' is derived from 'Keralam', which means 'land of the Cheras' - referring to the ancient Chera dynasty that ruled the region. The Cheras were one of the three great Tamil dynasties (Chera, Chola, Pandya). Tamil Nadu means 'land of Tamils', Mizoram translates to 'land of the Mizos', and Puducherry is 'new town' in Tamil.
