Mercury (Hg) is well-known for biomagnification in food chains because it accumulates in organisms and increases in concentration at higher trophic levels. Unlike SO2, NO3, or greenhouse gases like O3 and CO2 which disperse or cycle through the environment, mercury persists and concentrates, making it particularly dangerous to top predators including humans.

The Bhopal gas tragedy of 1984 was caused by methyl isocyanate (CH3NCO or MIC), a highly toxic chemical used in pesticide production. The gas leak from Union Carbide plant released this compound, which caused thousands of deaths and injuries due to its extreme toxicity to respiratory systems.

Decomposers (bacteria and fungi) break down dead organic matter and release mineral nutrients back into the soil, making them available for plant uptake. This completes the recycling loop in ecosystems, allowing nutrients to be reused rather than lost forever.

Eutrophication is caused by excess nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus) entering water bodies, leading to algal blooms. When algae die and decompose, oxygen is consumed, creating hypoxic or anoxic conditions. Fish die from oxygen deprivation, not from lack of food, light, or minerals.

In aquatic ecosystems like ponds, the pyramid of biomass is inverted because phytoplankton (producers) have very small biomass but reproduce rapidly, while zooplankton and fish have larger individual biomasses but slower reproduction. This creates more biomass at higher trophic levels than at the producer level.

At the climax stage of ecological succession, the ecosystem reaches equilibrium where gross primary productivity equals the rate of consumption by heterotrophs. This balance means net productivity approaches zero as energy inputs match energy outputs through respiration and consumption.

UV radiation damages DNA and causes genetic mutations in plants because it breaks chemical bonds in nucleic acids. While it can affect various cellular processes, its primary damaging effect is on genetic material, leading to mutations that can harm plant growth and survival.

In parasitic food chains, many parasites (or parasitoids) can live on a single host, creating more organisms at higher trophic levels than at lower ones. This always produces an inverted pyramid of numbers in forest ecosystems where tree hosts support numerous insect parasites.

Oceans are the most stable ecosystem due to their large volume, buffering capacity against temperature changes, high biodiversity, and resistance to physical disturbances. Their stability comes from size and water's thermal properties, making them less susceptible to environmental fluctuations compared to ponds, deserts, or forests.
