TOGAF and Enterprise Architecture

TOGAF Phase D - Technology Architecture - focuses on defining the technology components needed to support the architecture. The primary objective is to map application components (from Phase C) to concrete technology components representing hardware and software building blocks. Option A describes Phase B (Business Architecture), Option C relates to data architecture aspects, and Option D describes Phase C (Application Architecture).

Infrastructure applications are foundational software systems that support core IT operations. A VPN provides secure network communication infrastructure, network management systems monitor and control infrastructure, email is fundamental communication infrastructure, and office productivity software (while end-user facing) is part of the standard software infrastructure in organizations. All these represent different layers of IT infrastructure.

The TOGAF Technical Reference Model (TRM) consists of four main categories: Application Platform, Application Platform Interface, Applications, and Communication Infrastructure (with external environment). The TRM focuses on the technical architecture and platform services. 'Human Machine Interface' (HMI) is not one of these defined layers in the TOGAF TRM structure.

When selecting technology components in TOGAF, components that are part of the reference architecture are preferred because they're standardized, proven, and align with organizational architecture principles. Option A (declining) should be avoided. Option C (meets requirements) is necessary but not sufficient - a component meeting requirements might still be non-standard or proprietary. Option D (current only) lacks future-proofing.

In the TOGAF Technology Life Cycle, 'Core Architecture' represents mature, stable technology components that are strongly recommended for new implementations. These are proven technologies that align with the organization's reference architecture and strategic direction. Option A describes 'Contained', B describes 'Declining', and D describes 'Emerging' technologies.

In the TOGAF Technology Life Cycle, 'Contained' represents technology components that are currently installed and deployed but still require support and maintenance. These are legacy systems that may not be recommended for new implementations but must be supported because they're in use. Option B describes 'Declining', C describes 'Core Architecture', and D describes 'Emerging' or 'Invest' categories.

In the TOGAF Technology Life Cycle, 'Declining' represents technology components that are candidates for transition or retirement. These may be on a 'sunset' path for several years, meaning they're being phased out. Organizations should plan migration away from these technologies. Option A describes 'Contained', C describes 'Core Architecture', and D describes 'Emerging' technologies.

Gap analysis is the technique used to compare baseline (current state) and target (desired future state) architectures to identify differences, missing capabilities, and transition requirements. This is a standard architecture practice. Requirements analysis happens before gap analysis. Impact analysis assesses consequences of changes. Business strategy assessment informs the architecture but isn't a comparison technique.

Architecture frameworks provide structured methodologies for developing and managing enterprise architectures. Zachman Framework and TOGAF are both well-known architecture frameworks. Gartner, while primarily a research/advisory firm, does provide enterprise architecture frameworks and methodologies. ITIL (Information Technology Infrastructure Library) is an IT service management framework focusing on IT service delivery and operations, NOT an architecture framework for designing enterprise structures.

TOGAF (The Open Group Architecture Framework) is a comprehensive framework for enterprise architecture that provides methods and tools for designing, planning, implementing, and governing enterprise IT. 'Architecture' alone is too vague, while 'Technology Architecture' is only one domain within TOGAF. 'Strategic Planning Approach' and 'Governance Method' describe aspects but don't characterize it fully: it's explicitly a framework.

Nonfunctional requirements describe how a system performs (qualities like reliability, availability, security, serviceability) rather than what it does. Scope is a project management boundary concept (it defines what features are included/excluded) making it a functional concern, not a nonfunctional quality attribute.

TOGAF's four architecture domains are Business, Data, Application, and Technology. 'Systems architecture' is not one of them: it's a broader term that encompasses aspects of the other domains. Technology Architecture (Phase D) covers infrastructure and platforms but isn't called 'Systems architecture' in TOGAF terminology.

TOGAF is designed for enterprise-level architecture planning across business, data, applications, and technology. It's too broad for detailed software architecture design (that's a separate discipline) and not focused on real-time systems or human/organizational architecture. BPM for SOA is a specific technique, not TOGAF's level.

Technology Architecture defines the technology components and infrastructure needed to support applications and data. It's about what kinds of technologies (platforms, servers, networks) provide the environment. Options B, C, and D describe either too-narrow detailed design or implementation concerns rather than the architectural definition level.

Technical architecture covers hardware (A), software applications running on it (C), infrastructure services (D), and protocols (E). 'Interaction between application packages, databases, and middleware in terms of functional coverage' is about functional architecture/requirements (what modules do what) not the technical infrastructure layer.

In TOGAF's Technology Life Cycle, 'Emerging' technologies are new and not yet mature for production use. They're available for limited/pilot use. 'Installed' (A) is legacy. 'Transition/Sunset' (B) is the declining phase. 'Mainstream' would be strongly recommended. 'Emerging' = limited trials, not full deployment.

TOGAF's Architecture Development Method (ADM) has Phases A through H. Phase A is Architecture Vision, B is Business Architecture, C is Information Systems (Data + Application), D is Technology Architecture. Phase D specifically addresses Technology Architecture mapping application components to technology components.

Architecture principles are foundational, enduring guidelines that should change rarely. They're not tailored per project (A): they're enterprise-wide. They transcend business strategy (C) is wrong: principles align with strategy. Executive enforcement (D) is a misuse. Confidentiality (E) is wrong: principles should be widely communicated.
