Economic Anthropology and Economic Development

Economic anthropology is a subfield of anthropology that focuses on the study of economic behavior and decision-making in different cultures.

While economic anthropology does study gift-giving and exchange systems, subsistence strategies and resource management, and the impact of globalization on local economies, the role of markets and trade in economic development is typically studied by economists.

Polanyi argued that there are three main types of economic systems: reciprocity, redistribution, and market exchange.

Reciprocity involves direct exchange of goods and services, while redistribution involves the transfer of goods and services from one group to another through a central authority. Reciprocity is based on social obligations, while redistribution is based on economic need. Reciprocity is typically found in small-scale societies, while redistribution is typically found in large-scale societies.

Government regulation is not a characteristic of market exchange. Market exchange is typically characterized by voluntary participation, mutual benefit, and price determination through supply and demand.

The main goal of economic development is to increase the standard of living of a population, reduce poverty and inequality, and promote sustainable economic growth.

Imposing trade barriers is not a common strategy for promoting economic development. In fact, trade barriers can actually hinder economic growth by reducing competition and innovation.

Poverty and inequality, lack of access to education and healthcare, and poor infrastructure are all major challenges facing economic development in many developing countries.

Mainstream economic development theories are often criticized for being too focused on economic growth and neglecting social and environmental factors, being based on Western values and assumptions that may not be appropriate for other cultures, and ignoring the role of power and inequality in economic development. However, they are not typically criticized for being too optimistic about the benefits of globalization.

The main goal of sustainable economic development is to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs, to promote economic growth while protecting the environment, and to reduce poverty and inequality while promoting social justice.
