Runoff and Streamflow

Runoff is the process by which water flows over land surfaces and into streams, rivers, and other water bodies. It occurs when the rate of precipitation exceeds the rate of infiltration and evapotranspiration.

Temperature does not directly affect the rate of runoff. The other factors, such as rainfall intensity, soil permeability, and land use, all play a role in determining the rate of runoff.

A watershed, also known as a catchment or basin, is the area of land that contributes runoff to a particular stream or river. It is defined by the topographic boundaries that determine the direction of water flow.

Urbanization, with its increased impervious surfaces such as roads and buildings, reduces infiltration and increases the rate of runoff.

Streamflow is the term used to describe the flow of water in a stream or river. It is influenced by factors such as precipitation, runoff, and groundwater discharge.

Condensation is the process by which water vapor in the atmosphere changes into liquid water. It is not a component of the water cycle, but rather a part of the atmospheric water cycle.

Runoff can carry away soil particles, leading to soil erosion. This is especially true when the runoff is rapid and turbulent, as it can detach and transport soil particles more easily.

The mouth of a stream or river is the point at which it meets a larger body of water, such as a lake, sea, or ocean.

An evaporation pan is used to measure evaporation, not streamflow. The other methods, such as current meter, float method, and acoustic Doppler current profiler, are all used to measure streamflow.

Evapotranspiration is the term used to describe the process by which water moves from the land surface to the atmosphere through evaporation and transpiration. It is a key component of the water cycle.
