Chemistry: Elements and Metals

Larry Page and Sergey Brin founded Google in 1998 while they were Ph.D. students at Stanford University. They developed the PageRank algorithm that became the foundation of Google's search engine. Microsoft, Yahoo, and Amazon were founded by different people.

Jack Smith co-founded Hotmail along with Sabeer Bhatia in 1996. Hotmail was one of the first web-based email services and was later acquired by Microsoft. Bill Gates (Microsoft), Steve Jobs (Apple), and Ajay Bhat are not associated with Hotmail's founding.

YAHOO stands for 'Yet Another Hierarchical Officious Oracle' - a backronym coined by founders David Filo and Jerry Yang. The name originally started as 'Jerry and David's Guide to the World Wide Web' before being changed to the acronym YAHOO. It is indeed an acronym, not a surname.

ISP stands for Internet Service Provider - companies that provide individuals and organizations with access to the internet. ISPs offer services like broadband, dial-up, and fiber connections. 'Security Protocol', 'Survey Period', and 'Integrated Service Provider' are incorrect expansions.

Rust forms when iron reacts with oxygen in the presence of moisture/water, creating iron oxide. Only iron and iron-containing metals (like steel) rust. Gold and silver are noble metals that don't oxidize under normal conditions.

Metals have free electrons that can move throughout the material, making them excellent conductors of both heat and electricity. This is why copper, aluminum, and gold are used for wires and cooking utensils. Non-metals like wood and plastic are insulators.

Ductility is the property of being drawn into wires. Metals like copper and aluminum are ductile - they can be pulled through a die to make thin wires without breaking. Malleable means beaten into sheets, polymer refers to plastics, and stretchable is not the technical term.

Rust is iron oxide (Fe2O3·nH2O), formed by oxidation of iron in the presence of oxygen and moisture. It is not a nitride (compound with nitrogen), cyanide (compound with CN-), or sulphide (compound with sulphur). The reddish-brown coating is oxidized iron.

Malleability is the property of being beaten or rolled into thin sheets. Metals like gold, silver, and aluminum are highly malleable - think of gold foil or aluminum foil. Ductile means drawn into wires, polymer means plastic, and beatable is not a technical term.

Oxygen is the odd one out because it is a non-metal, while Sodium, Lead, and Iron are all metals. Metals are typically shiny, malleable, and good conductors of electricity, whereas oxygen is a gas that is a poor conductor.

Ores are rocks or minerals from which metals can be extracted profitably. They are rich in metal content. Allotropes are different forms of the same element, metallloids are elements with properties between metals and non-metals, and slag is waste material from metal extraction.

Magnesium reacts with oxygen to form magnesium oxide (MgO) in a combination reaction. This is a classic example of a metal combining with oxygen. Iron would form iron oxide (rust), and the generic term 'metal' is too vague.

Bauxite is the primary ore of aluminium. Aluminium is extracted from bauxite through the Bayer process and Hall-Heroult process. Gold is typically found in native (pure) form, silver comes from ores like argentite, and tungsten from wolframite.

Gold is often found in the pure (native) state because it is unreactive and doesn't easily combine with other elements. Iron, aluminium, and magnesium are highly reactive and are always found combined with other elements in nature.

Be is the chemical symbol for Beryllium, which has atomic number 4. The atomic number equals the number of protons in the nucleus. This is the second element in period 2 of the periodic table.

B is the chemical symbol for Boron, which has atomic number 5. It is the first element in period 2 that is not a metal (metalloid). The atomic number represents proton count.

F is the chemical symbol for Fluorine, which has atomic number 9. It is the first element in period 2 (the halogens). Fluorine is the most electronegative element on the periodic table.

Mg is the chemical symbol for Magnesium, which has atomic number 12. It is an alkaline earth metal in period 2, group 2. Magnesium is essential for chlorophyll in plants.

P is the chemical symbol for Phosphorus, which has atomic number 15. It is in period 3, group 15 (pnictogens). Phosphorus exists as white and red allotropes and is essential for DNA and ATP.

S is the chemical symbol for Sulfur, which has atomic number 16. It is in period 3, group 16 (chalcogens). Sulfur is a yellow non-metal essential for proteins and forms compounds like sulfuric acid.
